TCF Canada Writing Section (Expression Écrite) Prep Guide

The expression écrite (writing) section is scored by a human examiner against a rubric, like speaking. It's typically split into a few tasks of increasing length and formality — from a short practical message to a structured argumentative essay — all completed within a fixed time limit.

What the tasks generally cover

  • A short practical message: a note, text message, or email responding to an everyday situation — inviting someone, apologizing, giving simple instructions.
  • A narrative or descriptive piece: describing an experience, a place, or reacting to something you read or saw, in more developed paragraphs.
  • An argumentative essay: taking a clear position on a debatable topic and supporting it with organized reasoning and examples, at the higher levels.

What examiners are actually looking for

Beyond spelling and grammar, examiners assess whether you actually answered the prompt, whether your piece is organized into clear paragraphs with logical transitions, whether your register matches the task (informal note vs. formal essay), and whether you use a varied enough range of vocabulary and sentence structures for your target level. A grammatically simple but well-organized answer often scores better than an ambitious one full of errors.

How to prepare effectively

  1. Practice under a timer from the start — running out of time on the final task is one of the most common, avoidable point losses.
  2. Build a short mental template for the essay task: introduction with a clear thesis, two or three supporting paragraphs, a conclusion — so you're not structuring an argument from scratch under pressure.
  3. After writing, reread specifically for register — a message to a friend and a formal essay should not sound the same, and mixing them up costs points even when the grammar is correct.
  4. Keep a running list of connector phrases and higher-level vocabulary you can slot into an argument, and reuse them deliberately in practice until they feel automatic.
